I got a Olympus vn-4100 voice recorder. The built in mic picks up everything. Really can only lay it down. To much noise from holding it. Are other recorders like that? But what I was wondering is there a perference on external mics? Anything I should look for? A common one most people like to use? or just any old mic will do?

The handling noise is a common issue with digital recorders. Try using an in-expensive lapel type mic like the Olympus Tie Clip Microphone (ME-15) or one from Radio Shack. Or you can try something like the Sony ECMMS907 which uses the stereo mini-plug that fits most portable recorders, so you won't have to mess with an adapter.

The Sony has a decent frequency response and can be found for around $70 to $80. I use both the Radio Shack lapel mic, the Sony and an Optimus (Radio Shack) 330-3020 Boundary mic at times.

would it be better to spend the big bucks for a mic, or would a cheaper mic still work just as well?

well.. a better quality mic usually gets a clearer signal and will cover a wider 'vocal' or frequency range.
The trick is going to be getting it to connect to what you have. If you go into a decent music store with a knowledgeable pro audio dept. they should be able to hook you up with something that will work.. or be able to tell you exactly why it can't. either way you will have the knowledge you need.
If you wanted you could go the big bucks route and get a digital recorder that has stereo condenser mics built it and makes great recordings.. even puts it all onto a SD card so you can put it straight into thte computer as a .wav or .mp3 those are usually a couple hundred though.. .Zoom makes two great ones.. the H2 and H4.. just fyi

Picked up a Sony external F-V100 Omnidirectional the other day to go with my recorder type ICD-UX70 which should pick up from most any direction with the recorder then providing direct MP3 output.
