Last night on an investigation. The lead investigator had a older Sony HandyCam. She said it was one of the older Xray ones. The night vision on it was 4 times better then mine. It picked up so much more light with them running side by side. Sucks they stopped making them like that. I was so jealous!

In all likelihood, she was referring to a Sony camera made prior to 1998. They were dubbed "X-Ray" because if you added on a IR Pass Filter to the camera it had the ability to "see through" certain fabrics. After a few dozen complaints from people who found their images on the interweb Sony made some changes to their Night Shot mode to try to correct the problem.
The older models definitely have a better night shot mode, but finding one cheap is the issue. _________________ Eeek the Kat (aka Darren)

...Just to add , the old Xray Sonys , trv-65 etc , are Hi-8 format and came in both regular and digital...We use a trv-128 Hi-8 and a trv-280 Digital-8 and theres a big difference even between those 2 as for how the nightshot works...Although a lower quality video , the 128 is way better then then 280 in stock mode or using HVLs........

I seen on Ebay. They have the IR lens you can get for my Camera. Supposed to help with outside shooting. My Nightvision still sucks outside at night even with my IR spot light. (Works pretty good inside) Wondering if anyone has tired these or had any input on them.
...We also use IR filters...They come in 3 different strengths 720NM-indoor , 850NM-cloudy and 950NM-sunny...The ones saying a 1000NM are more then likely just 950...They are mainly for outdoor use during the day , the 720 works indoor in a room that has low light , example-a few candles lit but basically just makes the video more of a true green colour...The other 2 give more of an IR camera appearance in green or straight black and white , your choice...They wont help your camcorder at night...If your still interested you can get them at half the price then the above link , still from Ebay...You just need a 30mm as they are compatible will all sony cams using that thread size...Ours are 37mm and work on 30 or so different models.....
...This pic is using a 950NM in full sunlight on our trv-128 Hi-8...
