There has been a lot of discussion about these kind of devices lately in the paranormal community.

I've heard that Frank's Box is creating quite a stir, but I wonder if the one person "translating" the evp is not affected psychologically by his/her expectations. I think it would be great to build this box, but then add a library type headset where 12 or so people could be "listening in" with headphones at the same time. Have them write down what they think they are hearing and compare notes.

What are your thoughts about this device and others like them?

Honestly, I still haven't heard enough technical detail about how this thing works to pass any kind of judgement. From what I've gathered, it operates by tuning to a bunch of different radio frequencies at the same time. That being said, Occam's Razor tells me it is likely to be explained by radio interference.

On the flip side, I've heard some examples of EVPs coming from Frank's Box that are unmistakably clear and answering questions somewhat directly.

Either way, I can't accept it as what they present it as until I can get my hands dirty with it and experiment for myself. On your question, Denise: Yes, I do think it is leading to have someone telling people what the EVP says. I have aways thought at doing so was a poor way to conduct EVP experiments of any sort. Put the audio forth to people and ask what they hear.

I had the pleasure of listening to Frank's box up close really close like not 3 feet away! It is a remarkable device that works on the white noise principle, at least that I precieved it to be using.
Chris Moon was the operator of the box and did some translating of the voices coming from it, but like anything the more you use something the more your able to understand it.
I was very skeptical of the box before I listened to it, but after listening to the box and watching the reactions of the people asking question you have to give credence to it's validation. It's something you have to experience to come to your own conclusion because there will always be the nay sayers out there. I'm still pondering it over in my mind what I had heard and it's been a couple weeks since I heard it. APSR radio was there and taped their show and played it over the internet and should have it archieved.
One thing for sure it's not a toy to be played with!! It has been compared to the ouja board and does open a portal for whatever may want to come through, good or bad.
I ask everyone in earnest to study all that you can about Frank's box before you consider making one for yourself! It is a wonderful device if use with extreme caution and can have bad implications if not used properly! As it was explained by Chris Moon only 30 people in the world will be able to operate the box, that's not saying someone can build one and make it work but will it be working correctly?
Just my 2 cents worth but it's definitely not a toy to be played with! You can find out more info on Chris Moon's web site, Haunted Times Magazine.

From what I have read many have tried to duplicate the design but the only ones that work are the ones Frank builds. I know he had the schematic available to anyone who wanted it. I also read today that he is no longer associating with any Ghost Hunting groups, not sure of the reason.

Great idea, Denisee!! Also, yes..is it PK??

Is it PK? Well, I have been thinking about this quite a bit. Could it be "mind over matter"? I think it's always a possibility. I have wondered the same thing about EVP's in general especially when a question is answered directly or a team member's name is called.

We know that our thoughts affect the physical universe around us. So, it's not so far fetched to believe that our thoughts could cause a "disembodied voice" to be recorded. It's all energy....

I'm going to show this to Ronald. I wonder if this is something he can build? That is his line of work, after all. Laughing

Mooney, I've actually had the schematics for a litttle bit. Danny is building it. Sometimes having an electronics engineer hubby really pays off!

Ed, I'd have to agree with you completely. This is definitely not a toy. I can see some serious harm coming out of this - if it were to be used by some unethical people.

Has anyone experimented with the EVPMaker software? I have downloaded it, but haven't really tried it yet.

Denise: If you guys need any help building or testing it, let me know. I don't have enough free time of my own to build one from the ground up, but I can certainly lend a hand in bits and pieces.

This is very interesting. I found a video demonstration (sorry can't remember the site) and it appears to actually respond to direct questions. I have a couple of questions:

- Has anyone come up with a cost analysis to build one from scatch?

- From what I gather, it samples random frequencies on the AM band. What is the sample rate? Are we talking less than a 100 ms here or longer?

I tested a continuous stream of random samples, using my own voice, at a rate of 90-200ms, and I can actually hear full words at times. The higher the sample rate, the clearer the response was. It was actually a little creepy, since some of the words fit to questions I was asking. Just a fluke....

Anyway, I started looking into the box and started thinking of how I could do this with a laptop. One could use a serial controlled radio (like the Icom PCR100) and do the same thing as Frank's Box. There are some pros and cons to this configuration...

Pros:
- You would have a more portable setup. The images of Frank's Box I found look like a large guitar amp from the 70s.
- Computer controlled settings. I noticed the analog knobs on the Box - those are going to move during transport (nothing duck tape and a sharpie can't fix though).
- Larger frequency range... The Icom device would have a much larger range than AM alone. Not sure if this would help though.

Cons:
- Frank's Box is already out there and appears to function. Building something new might be a huge waste of time and money.
- The larger electronics might serve to assist in the actual communication process.

What do you guys think? The Icom device is about $140 bucks. I'm itching to pull the trigger but would love to hear a voice of reason first.

I haven't done a cost analysis yet, as I just got the instructions yesterday, but I am hoping to see what it would take to construct one in the near future.

One thing on your post, it looks like (from the pdf posted earlier) that Frank's Box does sample AM and FM frequencies and if I remember correctly it randomly scans through them switching back and forth. If it does do that then I'm not sure if the PCR100 has that capability (just did a quick read through of the website, will look more in depth later) unless you are talking about writing a customer interface for the device.

It does sound like something worth pursuing though. If nothing else than to see if you get similar results with whatever setup you end up with.

@eeek_the_kat

Yes, the Icom PCR100 covers both AM and FM (wide and narrow bands)
Found a cool site on it here

From the site:
Quote:

Incredible coverage is yours with reception from 10 kHz to 1300 MHz (less cellular). (Specifications guaranteed from .5 - 1300 MHz.) Modes of reception (and bandwidth) include AM (15/6 kHz), Wide-FM (230 kHz), Narrow-FM (15/6 kHz).

The thing I am worried about is how fast the device can tune in the frequency and move on to the next. I'm assuming it would need to tune in random frequencies at about 50 to 100 milliseconds. The output of the device could be feed back into the laptop and recorded with CoolEdit or similar. That would require a USB or Firewire audio device as there are not many Line-In ports on Laptops. I have no problem creating the needed backend programming.

@PonyBoy
You are right, it would be sweet. Can you image how the rig would look to the client? Especially if you had Cool Edit's spectrum analyser going and this crazy antennae attached <and everyone had tin foil hats on... to keep the aliens from probing minds - jk>
