Thanks for the compliments. I became fasinated with Savannah and her history after my first trip there. Ive been back several times and always feel like Im home when Im there. For those who have not had the opportunity to visit Savannah and our planning on attending GhoStock, I can guarantee you too will love it.
The spanish moss that drapes itself from the trees seem to provide a canopy across a bridge into another time. It is not difficult to imagine what times were like so many years ago. The history there is so rich, sometimes I swear I can smell it.
I cant think of Savannah without thinking of the 24 squares. General James Ogelthorpe wanted to develop a colony built around these squares where citizens could come to socialize and gather for civic events. Each square was named after an important person or event. Many of the squares are home to monuments or statues and, some serve as a final resting place. 20 of the original 24 still exist.
Johnson Square was the first square laid out in 1733. It was named after a good friend of Ogelthorpes, Robert Johnson. Johnson went on to serve as the mayor of S. Carolina. Located on this square, near the monument for Johnson, are the graves of Nathaniel Greene and his son.
Wright Square is the final resting place for Tomochichi, an indian chief who helped Ogelthorpe and other settlers. Years after Tomochichi's passing a monument was erected for William Washington Gordon. After the monument was completed they realized it had mistakenly been placed atop Tomochichis grave. A boulder, brought in from Stone Mountain, now serves as rememberance of Tomochichi. Wright Square also served as the public gallows. (Where did they bury those they hung in Wright Square? Across the street in a burial ground. Sadly, this burial ground can't be seen. Why? Because the haunted Lindsay Morgan Company was built on top of it. More on that building later Very Happy)
I have been enjoying sharing some Savannah stories with everyone. I hope that this will entice you to accompany us in July. Come take a stroll (thats what they do in Savannah) and sip a mint julip (thats what I do in Savannah).
Up next...another famous cemetery. Do stay tuned....

Colonial Cemetery
Opened in 1750, this cemetery remained open for 100 years. It, however, was not the first Colonial Cemetery. From 1733 to 1750, colonists were buried in a cemetery on Percival square (now Wright Square) on a site since developed with a high rise building. This high rise building is none other than The Lindsay Morgan Company mentioned briefly already.
Buried in Colonial Cemetery are two of Georgias early heroes, Button Gwinnett and General Lachlan McIntosh. A dispute rose between these 2 men and resulted in a duel. That exchange is thought to have taken place in the city dueling grounds, located convienantly behind Colonial cemetery. Gwinnett lost and died 3 days after the duel. The 2 men are buried near each other.
The cemetery has seen better days. Many of the markers are damaged or missing. Vandals gave cause for the cemetery to be locked at dusk. Many Savannah residents blame the City Department for the poor care given to the Cemetery, stating the use of riding lawn mowers and pesticides have destroyed many of the precious sandstone markers. General Shermans men also camped out in the cemetery and whiled away their time by changing dates on markers.
Many sightings have occured here. Full bodied apparitions (well sort of---missing ams and legs) have been seen floating around the grounds. One woman was said to have noticed a man in a restaraunt. Finding him attractive she decided to follow him (no stalking laws were in effect in those days). She watched him walk into Colonial Cemetery and then saw him fade until he completely disappeared. Her friends later found her frightened and sobbing. (Its hard to find a good man Very Happy). Ghosts in Revolutionary War attire have also been seen wandering the grounds. Apparently there are more than 14,000 graves here. A large portion of that 14,000 are not confined within the current cemetery grounds.

Speaking of Johnson Square, here is an interesting piece of legend / folklore about it...

We took a horse drawn tour last time we were in Savannah. As our buggy approached Johnson Square, our tour guide commented "do you feel the breeze?" Sure enough, there was a nice strong breeze blowing thru the square. She also commented about a temperature dip of about 5 degrees that is supposedly always there – even during the blistering hot summer months. We could feel that as well.

Legend has it that Robert Johnson said before he died "If I'm going to spend all eternity in Savannah, its going to be comfortable for me!" So apparently even when the air is still throughout the rest of Savannah, there is always a refreshing breeze in Johnson Square and it is a few degrees cooler.

The kicker though - our tour guide also commented about how Johnson despised the Spanish moss that adorns all of Savannah and the surrounding areas. Well, all except for Johnson Square - our guide said "Note that there is no Spanish moss growing here - the only square in Savannah with no Spanish moss."

And sure enough, not a single strand of the stuff was anywhere to be seen in this square.

Our hotel for the convention is a very short stroll from Johnson Square. During "GhoStock" have a look for yourselves and see if you can spot any Spanish moss there. Or if you can feel the temperature dip and relaxing breeze.

See if you think Robert Johnson tailor-made his final resting place in the after life to his liking!

Thats the way to show off that positive attitude Pete! Though not the most beautiful beaches I've been too, the beaches are not black by any means. Maybe it was night time when you were there. Razz

The Olde Pink House Restaurant
Home to what some call the most frequently seen ghost in Savannah, the Olde Pink House was built by James Habersham Jr. in 1771. He lived there for 31 years.
You may wonder why, in Gods name, did they paint it pink??!! Its not paint. The antique bricks, native to Savannah, bleed through the plaster causing this pink glow.
The Olde Pink House has a colorful history. Before the Revolutionary War, the home was a meeting place for the Liberty Boys, a group of young men who met in order to free colonial America from British rule. It was here that plans were made during one meeting that led to the capture of the British Governor of Georgia, James Wright. In 1812, the Olde Pink House became the 1st registered bank in GA. It underwent extensive alterations in order to serve this commercial purpose. A new north wing was added. A bank vault was installed and a one-story Greek portico with 4 Doric columns was attached to the front entrance. It was this bank vault that played a part in the War of 1812. During the War of 1812, the sons of James Habersham, Jr., James III and his two brothers, John and Joseph, captured British gold and stored it in one of two vaults. Later, when Savannah was captured by Union troops, Brigadier General Lewis York used the house as his headquarters.
The Olde Pink House served as many different businesses until 1970 when it was purchased by Herschell McCallan and Jeff Keith and transformed into the Olde Pink House Restaurant for gourmet dining. It is considered one of Savannah's finest restaurants. Today, it has a special room, a restored dining room that visitors can view from behind a locked wrought iron gate, with authentic furniture from 1779. Furnishings include stuff back chairs and hardwood floors.
After the Revolutionary War, Habersham, Jr. was forced to sell his beloved Pink House because he lost his fortune. He died in 1799, five years after his wife. A state historical marker is posted in tribute to the Habersham brothers and their work to free Georgia from British rule. It can be viewed at the Colonial Park Cemetery where James Habersham, Jr. and his brothers are buried. Later, years after James Habersham, Jr.'s death, his house was acquired by the Bank of the United States. It is now a famous restaurant.
The room behind the iron gate is where a good deal of paranormal activity happens. The ghost reportedly rearranges furniture and lights candles in this room. This activity has been reported even when no one present in the restaurant had a key to the gate.
Also, many people have reported seeing strange, unexplained happenings in the Olde Pink House. At times, groups of people have been seen moving about by candlelight after the restaurant was closed for the evening. Others have reported feeling a strong presence and seeing a gentlemen in old-fashioned attire and a wig. These people say the gentlemen looks like the portrait of Habersham, Jr. hanging in the restaurant. One witness, manager Rick Ellis, reported that one night after the restaurant closed and the lounge was still open on the ground floor that 26 people felt the room get hot and saw a white vapor descending the stairs. One source claims that Habersham hanged himself in the basement of the Olde Pink House and his tragic death led to the haunting. Many employess will not descend the steps to the basement alone. The ghost of General Habersham has also been spotted in the bar.
Spirits anyone??

When we went to Savannah in January, the beach on Tybee was quite nice, I thought. Not up to the Bahamas, but definitely right up there with Jekyll. As for the Lighthouse, we only had to pay one fee for admittance to the whole site, including going up in the lighthouse itself---which is very, very high. Looking down from the top was an experience my stomach won't soon forget Laughing . I believe someone is checking on group tour rates for the lighthouse, if it hasn't already been posted.

Counting down the days here!

The beaches were pretty yucky looking when I was there too Pete. I didnt enjoy myself much on Tybe Island. It could of been the time of year I went too. I did however enjoy Savannah but I didnt get to do any Real looking because the family was there. It would be nice to go with everybody in July but I dont think its gonna happen for me this time but I still have hope so maybe things will change.

I guess it all depends on ones definition of what a "nice" beach is. As Pam pointed out, we aren't talking about the Carribean here - its the eastern seaboard of the US. But the beach at Tybee (when we saw it) was kept clean of trash.

If you are looking for "picture postcard" crystal clear blue waters, you ain't gonna find it anywhere on the Georgia coast. On the otherhand, the water at Tybee (while somewhat murky) was definately not as silty as the water in St. Simons (which doesn't bother me either - I grew swimming in the Fox River in Illinois which was quite muddy; on par with the 'Hooch.

NOTE TO SELF - Pete wants a nice beach... GhoStock in the tropics for 2006? Twist my arm! Cool

lol nah i just put my 2 cents in and state my experiences negative or not. Didn't mean to squelch anyones beach plans or anything it's just Savannah isnt known for their beaches. Cleanest beach i've been to on the East coast was Mexico Beach in Florida, it's just past Panama City Beach and you can see the signs from there. Very clean waters of course it all depends on the time of year.

Usually around Novemeber and Winter approaching the temperature is very comfortable down there but the water will be nasty and the tide will be outrageous. Most of the time you will see red flags along the coast meaning no swimming from the tide or current being too strong and it can pull you under and out to sea if you're not careful. Summertime is the obvious time to go but it's really really hot at this time and for those that are from georgia, it doesn't get hot here compared to Florida. Last Summer i spent there i had 2nd degree burns from the first day when we rented bikes and rode all day long without sunscreen. We were too sick to do anything for 2 days. It's like stepping out of where youre staying and walking out into an oven. It's that hot and the heat is hard to get used to if you've never been.

If you like to fish or go on a deep sea fishing trip it's not wise to plan one around November and around that time of year as well because there's not alot of people there almost barely enough to fill one boat so they usually won't even go out unless they get alot of people and if the tide is too high or strong they can't go out at all.

Patrick picked a good spot for Ghostock, we are going as ghost hunters not Bikini watchers and fisherman. lol I do love the beach though but i wasn't expecting much time on the beach in Savannah and just replied when someone said Savannah had "nice" beaches and again i suppose it really is what you would consider a nice beach. For the record a "nice" beach to me would be clean white sand, Blueish or clear see through water, big waves in the deep parts and low tide on the surf. Of course plenty of bikini clad babes! lol For those that can't go to the Bahamas or something along those lines, Mexico Beach isn't too much further than PC Beach and has a beach pretty close to what i described depending on the time of year you go.

I tried for KW but I was outvoted! Razz Ironicly, the Keys have very few decent beaches. They are lil tiny islands surrounded by mangrove trees for the most part. Of course there are exceptions (Sombrero Beach in Marathon - courtesy of Hurricane George. Was built when the storm dumped a bunch of sand there!) But most of them are small and manmade.

Pete187Rock wrote:

Nope. You are not going to find that ANY where in Georgia. Or the Keys for that matter. Personally am just thankful to see the ocean when I can, and a beach that isn't strewin with litter or the smell of rotting fish washed ashore is a bonus. Cool The Tybee Beach is pretty "nice" in my book - and it better be for what homes go for out there! The water visibility or "vis" as us Scuba divers call it? That’s questionable. And of course mostly out of the hands of man.

ANYwho... Savannah was not selected for beaches, it was selected for GHOSTS! And in that respect, it will fit the bill! Green with envy!
