I’ve long wanted a forum where some of us could engage in discussions of a technical nature with other “geeks”.

Based on the recent thread on EVP, I see that other like minded individuals are in our group now and the time is ripe to create a technical forum. I feel that a separate forum is definitely in order so that we don’t bore the non-geeks among us to tears. LOL!

PLEASE NOTE – this message forum is for technical discussions only. I may “prune” this forum from time to time, deleting non-vital and non-technical posts – my own included! The reason being I would like the archives of this forum to be easy to search for anyone doing research to find what they are looking for, and not have to sift thru a bunch of irrelevant posts or replies.

With that said – GEEK MODE ON! Cool

Yes the Technical Forum. From now on I will be limiting my posts to this forum, with the possible exception of one or two posts in the Collective Wisdom Forum. For those of you interested, my Technical background springs from my Army career where I was trained to find and remove mine fields. I know some tricks with some equipment and have been trained to find things that are by nature very hard to find.

Sounds great to me ....

YAY....I get to post the first "techie" question. I'm looking at software..specificially audio and video software for reviewing evidence. I was curious to find out what software the other Hounds use.

For myself, I'm using mostly Sony equipment...Handycam, CyberShot, and Digital Audio Recorder. For audio, it is creating .dvf files which I'm converting into .wav files so that I can run them in Adobe Audition. For digital pics, I use Adobe Photoshop CS2. For video, I'm still up in the air as to software. Any suggestions, advice are appreciated.

I have a question that I think is appropriate for this thread. I'm not sure if it's been addressed before so if it has or if this is not the proper forum, please let me know. I've been doing some research on ghost hunting equipment. I'm particularly intriqued by the EMF meters. I've seen it mentioned a time or two that the Trifield EMF Natural Meter is for experienced ghost hunters only. Beginners should use another type of meter. Since I am one that usually questions *everything*...I wanted to know if this was valid or not? I am very new to this but it seems like a waste of money to buy one meter when you know you would eventually like to end up with another? I'd like to hear some opinions from the experienced hunters on this! Thanks!

Hi Laurie...

The Trifield Natural EM meter is a nice high-end EMF detector. However it is too sensitive usually to walk with it - normally you set you set it down, let it zero out to the baseline level, and then back away from it - moving within 15 feet of this meter (when the condtions are right) can trigger it - its THAT sensitive!

For a beginner, they are probably better off with a more mobile device, I'd recommend the "Dr Gauss" (also known as "Gauss Master") or Cell Sensor emf detectors.

The Gauss type is all over ebay, if you get lucky you can find one pretty cheap, I got mine for less than $10.

Perfect! This was just the explanation I was seeking out and it makes alot of sense to me! Thanks again!

P.S- Since I'm still learning my way around this site...is there an area dedicated to equipment recommendations...including name brands and such? I'm new and have so much to learn. I don't want to waste anybody's time asking repetitive questions!

Thanks for the reminder about Ebay. I go to Ebay for everything but don't ask me why...it didn't occur to me to go there for this!!!!

Fry's sells a lot of different electronics equipment. If you do not have a Fry's in your area try outpost.com (Fry's online store).

...Hi , Im not sure what model your Sony is...We use a DCR-280 and an older TRV-128 and they both take the same battery ...We use the ones that are good for 3 to 4 hours with the LCD screen on , the model is the " NP-QM91 "....The stock battery , I think its an NP-FM50 , is only good for about an hour...We got ours new from Ebay for $25 each...They are not genuine Sony products , but we have never had any issues with them...If you type that model # into any search engine youll find them for anywhere from $30 to over $100 and most sites tell you what model of camcorders it works with....If the stock is all you need , of couse its cheaper.....

Try Best Buy or a camera shop...they could look it up and probably order you one...let your fingers do the walking and call...

Is it neccesary to use a digital recorder when trying to record EVP's? I have an old fashioned recoreder I use in school, It has a tape in it, I know, I know) Anyway. I have tried to get EVP's on several different occassions with it and have been unsuccessful. Is that the reason? Because it is noy digital?

Fantastic advice, Patrick! I wonder if there is someone that has one of these for sale? Maybe you bought yourself a better meter with more bells and whistles and don't need the old one? ROFL!

not at all. you can record EVP on any kind of audio recording device. to pull from the bag o' generic suggestions, if you're using an analog (i.e. tape) recorder, be sure to use an external microphone as well. the analog recorders have a tendency to record the sounds of the mechanics used to turn the tape spools and whatnot.

We have been using our old camcorder. It's a Sony. We found a replacement battery at Wal-Mart.
