I don't know of any but I have been searching for some as well. My parents just moved to Evans and I go there most weekends. I would love to go hunting anyone knows of any places. I looked on Shadowlands but there wasnt much. I was pretty suprised since Augusta is old. Wink

I've done some initial research and found out that theres an old trading house on Broad St. (The Mackey Trading House) where some colonists were hanged by the British thats supposedly very haunted. Also Pendleton Park and the Ezekial Harris House are reported to have some activity as well. If anyone has heard anything about these places or any others in the Augusta area please let me know.

There are, actually, plenty of places in Augusta that are considered haunted. The problem is getting permission to go into them.

On either Broad or Green Street downtown (I can't remember which right now) is a run down elementary school called Houghton Elementary. I am not sure who currently owns this property, but the historical society is pitching a fit about the owner's plans for the property, so getting permission for a ghost hunt is probably going to be difficult if not impossible.

The McKay house does not exist. The Ezekiel Harris House was thought to be the McKay trading post for some time, but this was later shown to be untrue. More likely than not, because it is a museum of sorts, you will not be able to get in at night without knowing someone who works there.

St. Paul's, also downtown, is an easy one to get to. It is the large church on Reynold's Street - across the street from the Augusta Museum of History and right next to the large gravel parking lot near the playground at Riverwalk. You cannot get into the church itself during the night hours, but the graveyard is still accessable since it surrounds the church and is not gated.

On the corner of 5th and Broad (by the Water Store) is a pillar. This pillar is considered haunted or cursed. The actual origin of the pillar is widely speculated, but a google search will get you a good bit of information. Just don't try to move it.

The Old Medical College building (I think this is on Greene, but I am not sure) is supposedly haunted by the Resurrection Man.

Magnolia Cemetary - which is not accessable after 8 p.m. - is haunted as well.

Appleby Library on Walton Way is also haunted by the spirit of Mrs. Appleby. The library was a residence before it became a library and is quite interesting. I have not been in the building at night, but even during the day (I was lucky enough to know someone who worked there at one point and was given permission to give me a tour), it is an interesting place.

Augusta State University, also on Walton Way, has a few hauntings. A Civil War soldier is seen in the cemetary next to the student parking area. This is the most prevalent haunting on the campus.

The Bonaire, which is now an old folks home, and the Partridge Inn, across the street (both are on Walton Way) are haunted. The Bonaire is the large white building that sits on the hill and the Partridge Inn is an interetsing pinkish color that is hard to miss.

The burnt-out ruins of a rehabilitation center can be found in Richmond County off of Peach Orchard Road. The road leading to it is very hard to find and I do not suggest going out there as it is rather dangerous with all the rubble.

Columbia Middle School (which is still very much in use) on Columbia Road out toward Appling is haunted by the spirit of an old principal who is rumored to have died in the school.

About an hour or so from Augusta just past Waynesboro is Big Buckhead Church. We have investigated this church numerous times and we have never been disappointed. Across the street from the church is a small graveyard, but you have to go through some woods to find it. Down the road a bit is the dirt road the Union Soldiers were said to have marched down at the time of the Battle of Buckhead. Somewhere else on the road - I have never seen it, but I know it is there - is the plantation home where the bodies of the Union and Confederate dead were burried in a mass grave. The Confederate dead have since been exhumed and reentered in a cemetary in Waynesboro by the Daughters of the Confederacy.

Across the river in North Augusta, is another old elementary school. The school was put out of use by a newer school opening. After its closing, a portion of it burned down with a girl still in it (drugs are bad, okay?). Because the police had no reason to look for a body, the fire was put out and everyone went about their business. After awhile, the people living around the school began complaining of a smell. Finally, the girl's body was found. To make a long story short, the girl haunts the school, although the burned out section has since been levelled. The property does have an owner, but I am not sure if it is the same one that owned it when I went there. A little research may be necessary.

Augusta itself has plenty of other haunted places, but I cannot remember all of them off the top of my head at 5:32 in the morning. As I remember them, I will list them.

Feel free to email me with questions or if you're looking for a group to go hunting with. tinyvoid@gmail.com

One more thing I neglected to mention - Augusta has a ghost tour. I believe it is called the Augusta Ghost Walk and they are based downtown. The pricing is pretty good.

Thanks for the info you've been a big help. Where exactly are the burnt ruins off Peach Orchard Road?? I had a friend of mine mention those as well.

The road is hard to spot, so I'll give the directions as best I can.

Hit Peach Orchard going toward Waynesboro. (Don't actually leave Augusta, though). After you pass the Bilo, start looking for a large yellow sign that says something about a pharmacy. The road is either right before or right after the sign.

I strongly urge you to use caution. It is VERY dark down this road and it is very narrow. There is no where to park a car except on the road itself. Once you have parked your car, continue on the road and keep an eye out to the right. You'll see the building's foundation - which is pretty much all that is left of it.

The area is filled with debris and a section of it is difficult to walk on because of all the broken stone. Do not step anywhere without looking first because you could fall off of the edge of the foundation.

From what we were told ...

The place used to be a rehab center for alcoholics. To make a long story short, one of the alcoholics in the program started a fire which burned down the whole place.

We have only been out there once. We didn't actually experience anything ourselves, all we have is what other people have experienced. Everything from lights to voices.

It has recently come to my attention that there are catacombs beneath Washington Hall on the ASU campus.

Beneath the catacombs (or perhaps in them, I am not positive) is an area where one can find civil war era shell casings

Be aware that you *must* get permission from the Director of Student Activities to go down there.

Just a little info on the catacombs,There are tunnels under augusta all over the place, my father in law had a shop on 13th and jones,
I dont know what it was before then but there is a access to the tunnels inside his shop,Ive heard some were used for the underground railroad to get slaves out of augusta,Ive also heard that they were a way to get munitions around secretly from the powder works on the canal, never did get to go into them but I bet there would be some activity there.

Thanks for the info!

Does your father in law still own the shop and would he grant a group of ghost hunters permission to access the tunnels through his shop?

Unfortunatly no, He passed away last july, Just a side note on those, there may be tresspassing issues there as far as the city is concerned. But there must be other access to those tunnels somewhere, I will do some checking around (snooping is probly more appropriate...lol) And I will post what I come up with.

I just remembered something also as for anouther place to hunt,
Have you been to phinizy swamp nature park? There is a small cemetary in there with pretty old graves dateing back to the early 1800's I belive, I have been there twice, very small maybe 5-6 graves it has chain link around them but you can stand right at the fence and read the stones quite clearly, They are on a marked trail
and on the map for the park so I would guess as long as you dont hop the fence tresspass would not be a issue,Just thought I would pass that along Very Happy

I'm sorry for your loss.

As for the Pinezy Swamp area, I had not actually thought about it, but it would be a good place to check out.

There are also a million and a half little cemetaries all over Ft. Gordon. Of course, there's the small hassle of getting your car checked when you go on base, but that's 5 mins tops to get through the gate.

If you head to Mirror Lake (because I can't remember road names, I'll have to post directions later), you'll notice that there are quite a few dirt roads leading off of the immediate lake area. Follow those dirt roads and you'll come across places that may or may not (they didn't take very good care of these cemetaries, I guess) be roped off. There will be a sign, usually nailed to a tree, that says "Cemetary No. 21" or something to that effect.

Some of the cemetaries have gravestones, but from my experience, most do not.

Tresspassing laws really aren't an issue in this case, as the lake and the dirt roads surrounding it are for public use. However, be careful not too wander too far and pay attention to signs, you don't want to wander into an area that is still used for training.

You guys are in a great area to hunt. I use to live in that area and just from riding into other little towns I found some really cool places. One was an old slave market but I can't for the life of me remember that town name but sure you could find it on the net. Also alot of other places south of augusta. Sure wish I could get back down that way again!!

Augusta's walk is Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, $12 a person, leaves from Broad St next to the Imperial Theatre, and you have to have a reservation.

I haven't taken it yet, but I want to.

Where along 56 is the house?? I'd love to investigate it with you sometime. There's also a revolutionary war era cemetary off of 56 near the Goshen Road intersection that may have some activity.
